Aud Max Ås, Norway. 2023 - ongling

Aud Max is NMBU’s largest auditorium and is central to student life on Campus Ås. The protected building, designed by Leif Olav Moen, is a top example of modernism from the 60s and 70s. The building will be upgraded to meet current and future needs while creating a pleasant meeting place for vibrant Campus Ås.

The rehabilitation involves an extensive external and internal technical and functional upgrade of the protected building in addition to the associated outdoor area.

The original building is constructed with unique cast in place concrete structural system consisting of two large pre-stressed beams parallel to the longitudinal direction of the auditorium seating. Over those beams, secondary pre-stressed girders hold up the roof and the stage fly tower. Unlike many buildings in Norway, concrete elements are exposed both on the inside and outside, which creates extensive cold bridges. Careful consideration is needed to balance the need to reduce cold bridges vs. the conservation of the structural integrity of the building in order to reduce energy consumption during operation. Some concrete elements experience extensive deterioration from chlorides. A sensible conservation approach is being developed.

The detailed project is ongoing.
