The Corridor National Museum, Oslo, Norway. 2025
The commission was to realize A K Dolven’s vision for the exhibition A K Dolven. amasone—the first retrospective solo exhibition by a living Norwegian artist at the new National Museum of Norway (25 April – 31 August 2025). Element Arkitekter served as exhibition architects, with consulting engineers from DIFK.
The aim was to facilitate a sensory and thematically diverse exhibition experience—featuring video, sound, painting, sculpture, and photography—that explores nature, the body, time, and culture.
The artist envisioned an invisible passage where the works would appear to float freely and be viewable from both sides. Inspired by a museum in Brazil, and developed through close dialogue between architect and artist, the solution became a plexiglass corridor.
The plexiglass panels were initially dimensioned at 50 mm for stiffness but proved too heavy. A thickness of 25 mm was selected as the optimal solution. There were no existing standards for hinges or connections, making bespoke fabrication essential. The design was developed as a demountable system, with custom plexi fasteners created specifically for the project. Physical testing was carried out on the wall-to-ceiling connections as part of both acoustic and structural verification—conducted in close collaboration with Dolven.
The result is a technically refined solution that supports both the artistic vision and the audience experience—a balanced integration of engineering and creativity.
