Grand Hotel office. stockholm. sweden. 2014.

DIFK took part in the competition of refurbishing Grand Hotel, Stockholm.

The extension of three office floors which all span over the huge room of the atrium, represents drastic volume changes, and a significant load increase. The existing brick walls of the building were not dimensioned to carry this extra weight. The innovative solution became drilling steel columns all the way through the brick walls, down to solid ground. In this way visible columns in the protected and specatular rooms could be avoided.

The solution was a truss system spanning in both directions of the building to distribute the load on the outer walls. This reduces the load on each point, which in turn makes it easier to implement a hidden pillar construction. The truss system is integrated into three new floors.
