Bystrand Bergen and Lungegårdspark waterfront park. bergen. norway. 2020 - ongoing
The new Bergen city beach and Lungegårdspark will be a one-kilometer-long park just outside Bergen’s city center. The project integrates spaces for people, nature, animals and water into a spectacular and sustainable urban environment. The park is scheduled to be launched in 2025. DIFK has collaborated with White architects and AFRY on the project’s design.
The park will be built on top of blasting fill from the new nearby light rail tunnel. The project consists of terraced landscape structures, foundations and bridges. Locally sourced timber, stone, filler, soil and vegetation will be utilized as to withstand the tidal zone condition, heavy visitor use, and the harsh weather conditions in Western Norway. Blasted rock from the light rail tunnel will be re-used as gabions which structure the park and secure the area against flooding and erosion. Piers, the breakwater, benches, rain roofs, and buildings will be constructed of wood. Railings and service furniture will be produced in steel. Development and procurement of locally sourced and re-used materials are planned to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
